What is a Universal Account Number?

A UAN or Universal Account Number: a number allotted to each and every member of EPFO. As the name suggests, It is a unique identification number. And the Ministry of Labour and Employment issues the UAN. An individual may have only one UAN during his service period. And most of the EPF services need the UAN. We’ll be covering UAN FAQs.

The Universal Account Number (UAN) has gained alot of importance. Most of the services of the Employee Provident Fund (EPF) are online. And access to all those services requires a UAN. All these services online and that too without the help of your employer. In this article we answer everyone’s questions and cover UAN FAQs.

UAN FAQs

Who allots UAN?

The Employee Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) allots UAN when an employee subscribes to the EPF.

Can I have two UANs?

No, EPF only allots one UAN per individual. And that UAN is transferable across all eligible employers.

Is UAN mandatory for online claims?

Yes, without UAN, you cannot make online claims.

Is UAN linked with the PAN of the employee?

Yes, since the EPFO allot only one UAN per person. Linking the PAN and the UAN ensure this.

Do your employers have any control over the EPF balances?

No. Your employers have no control over your EPF balances with EPFO. Only you can withdraw this balance. Your employer cannot block these funds. Also, the same holds true even incase of job changes. Your balances are not affected by job changes.

Will my UAN change if I change my job?

Incase of a job change, share your UAN with the new employer. The employer links the new PF account to it. Again, note that EPFO only allots one UAN per individual. And only creates new members IDs incase of job changes. The UAN allotted remains the same throughout your career.

What information does the UAN card have?

The UAN card contains the information about the universal account number and the KYC details. Also, contains the recent five-digit member id and EPFO helpdesk contact numbers.

How to transfer old EPF accounts and connect them to UAN?

First ensure the linking status of the current EPF account and the UAN. Note that EPFO portal allows linking of all the old EPF accounts online. And apply and check the status of transfer requests as well.

What to do if two UANs get allotted?

In this case, inform the EPFO helpdesk immediately. After the verification process, they block the old UAN.

What to do incase your EPF card contains wrong information?

If you want to change your father’s name, your name or DOB, it can be done by presenting valid documents to the current employer. Also, communicate the same to the EPFO helpdesk to get the necessary changes done on the UAN card.

How long does it take for EPFO to make changes?

The process starts once your employer sends the details to the respective field office. Although it usually takes a month for the changes to take effect.

How to link Aadhar with UAN?

There are different ways to link Aadhar with UAN. You can use Umang App, biometric credentials on e-KYC Portal or OTP verification on e-KYC Portal of EPFO to link Aadhar.

What to do if UAN update is pending for long at field office?

Sometimes the UAN update process gets delayed. Primarily because of delays from local authorities. However, EPF portal allows raising complaints in such cases. In such cases of delays raise a compliant from your EPF portal for faster processing.

Can I transfer my EPF balance from one UAN to another UAN?

Yes. On the UAN portal, you can transfer EPF from one UAN to another. Follow the procedure mentioned below:

  • Login to your current UAN account
  • Select ‘One member One EPF account’
  • Enter the previous UAN details
  • Complete the verification from employer
How to check UAN status online?

The portal allows checking of the status of the UAN application. Do this just by providing the state and EPFO account number on the portal. Go to Our Services>For Employees>Member UAN/Online Service>Know UAN Status.

Why is my UAN KYC pending?

Generally, reviewing and approval of documents takes 3 to 5 days. If your UAN KYC is pending for more than 7 days, file a complaint. Or contact the regional EPFO officer through the help desk online or call.

I forgot my UAN, how to retrieve it?

Forgot your UAN. It is always possible to retrieve it. However,  its possible only its linked with your Aadhar card or PAN Card. That is why we always recommend linking. Assuming that its linked, follow this path for retrieval.

  • Go to the EPFO homepage > For Employees > Member UAN > Know the status
  • Enter all the details asked for and then click on ‘Get Authorization Pin’ button
  • Get the OTP and then click on the “I Agree” to finish the process.
As an EPFO member, what facilities am i entitled to?

Currently, EPFO made the following facilities available for its members:

  • Viewing previous member IDs
  • Editing personal details online from the portal
  • Download UAN Card
  • View/edit/update complete KYC details
  • View and download passbook
  • Conduct an eligibility check online
  • Link the UAN with Aadhaar
What is my password for logging into the UAN portal?

You create a password during your activation of UAN. Creation of the password is necessary to log in to your account in the future. Use the password set during activation of UAN for login to the UAN portal.

Which documents can be submitted as KYC documents/proofs?

Use the following documents for KYC.

  • Permanent Account Number
  • Bank Account Number
  • Ration Card
  • Election Card
  • Driving Licence
  • Aadhaar Card
  • Passport
  • National Population Register (NPR)
Can I upload KYC documents after scanning?

Upload a scanned document of a maximum size of 300 KB. Also, only upto 8 scanned documents maybe uploaded.

How can I add photographs to my UAN Card?

Currently, photographs are not available on the UAN card. Although, the facility will soon be made available.

Who should I contact for UAN portal related queries?

You can contact the EPFO helpdesk for any queries regarding the UAN portal. Just send an email at uanepf@epfindia.gov.in or call the helpdesk number.

Why auto-transfer of PF require member activation?

Linking activation and EPFO services ensures that members stay updated. Updated on the status of surely their transactions on their registered mobile numbers.

Do I get any benefits by updating my KYC details?

Updating KYC details gives the following additional benefits:

  • Easy withdrawal of PF
  • Easy transfer of PF
  • SMS updates on a monthly basis on PF status.
